About

Kayla Rumpp (she/her) is a visual artist, and educator from Tennessee. Her work explores the relationship between painting and sculpture, informed by a fascination with childlike ways of making and seeing. Rumpp’s sculptural-paintings synthesize an intuitive use of color and material with regimented systems for deriving shapes and palettes. Popsicle stick forms, inspired from her time working as an elementary art educator, act as recurring imagery that varies from piece to piece. All works are drawn, cut, and painted completely by hand leaving evidence of human construction within the framework of hard edge geometric abstraction.

Rumpp earned a MFA in Painting and Drawing (2023) from the University of Iowa. She also holds a MS in Art Education (2017), and a BFA in 2D Studio Art (2016), from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She has been featured in several publications including New American Paintings, Burnaway, Create! Magazine, The Tennessean, I Like Your Work, and The Nashville Scene.
